Phony - silent place

 



This CD-single is a sort of taster from the soon to be released debutalbum ("Phony-Love" will be the title) from this Berlin-based band whose members hail from Canada and the U.K. Hmmm, I won't compare Firestation Tower to the Spanish Elefant-label (therefore Firestation has too much an own face!) but it's certainly so that this could easily be an Elefant-release!!! The sort of sunshinny summerpop for indiekids who never have the upcoming feeling to search up the beach..... It's all happy pop with 60's moods and the sort of music that makes you feel melancholic...not that far away from Aztec Camera, Saint-Etienne or lots of other undiscovered popdiamonds.... Now where's that icecream-van ????

Locker-flockig gespielte popmusik, wie sie britischer nicht klingen koennte. mal singt er, mal singt sie, und zwischen leicht melancholischem Slowmotion-Pop a la The Beautiful South und latinomaessig angehauchten Shaker bewegen sich Phony durchaus souveraen. Britpopfans sollten diese platte auf jeden fall anchecken.

Fluffiger Groove, softer Mitwackel-und-Eis-schleck Beat und vor allen Dingen nicht der Wunsch, einen Hit fuer die Ewigkeit schreiben zu wollen, machen Phonys erste EP zu einem Gluecksfall.

Berlinern duerfte schliesslich die Geschichte hinter den Bands Lato und Phony, die vor der Veroeffentlichung ihrer Alben ebenfalls jetzt ebenfalls neue Singles an den Start bringen, hinlaenglich bekannt sein. Hier hiess man zuerst Blochin 81, dort Spy, und die Unterschiede zwischen den beiden waren und sind, nicht zuletzt da die Musiker der beiden Bands gut miteinander befreundet sind, gering. In beiden Formationen darf Britpop noch Koenig sein, auch wenn sich Lato mit dem Style Council-Cover "It Just Came To Pieces In My Hands" wohl eher im Northern Soul beheimatet wissen wollen.

Phony, based in Berlin, have a 4 song CDEP, Good Times. The title track is upbeat guitar/keyboard pop with mass appeal. Silent Place sounds like a totally different band - jazzy, bossaish pop with a female vocalist. Long Away is in the style of popular indie bands, with a hint of 60s pop. Finally there's a Capsule remix of Silent Place which combines the bossa-pop of the original with extra percussion and electronic bits.
