Germany is a country which has a great reputation for excellent noise rock and guitar pop. The Seaside Stars are a duo (!) from Berlin playing these genres of music in an incredibly great way. The opener Good Timing is a perfect mix of melodic guitars and the right groove, a welcome invitation to listen to the rest of the album. The following songs are as melodic in a very alternative way so that the Seaside Stars may be declared the Beach Boys of guitar pop. Of course the Seaside Stars vocals are less high and annoying as it was the case for the Beach Boys. Their singer has a calm but warm voice reminding me of Tom Liwa or Sharon Stoned. Somehow the Seaside Stars can be compared to Teenage Fanclub, an alternative rock band from the early Nineties. Some songs like Don't Mind or Playground are so relaxed and calming that they have a real hit potential. The Magic Of Stereo is one of the most beautiful pop albums I have ever been listening to.

 

Halt mal an, mir ist so komisch. Das darf doch nicht wahr sein. DIESE Band stammt aus Berlin? Nie im Leben. So was Frisches habe ich ja schon eine Weile nicht mehr gehoert. Aber es ist wahr! Es ist gar nicht so einfach, was ueber diese zwei Jungs rauszufinden: Die FST-Website gibt gar nichts her, das offizielle Info ist gerade mal zwei Zeilen lang und auf der Band-Website ist neben ein paar Fotos und mp3s auch nicht viel zu finden.
Also: diese zwei Jungs, naemlich Hans Forster und Andi Schuwirth, haben mal eben zu Hause eins der schoensten Gitarrenpop-Alben der letzten Zeit aufgenommen. Zu Hause?! Ihr tickt doch nicht richtig. Diesen warmen, runden Sound bekommt man doch nicht zu Hause hin. Sind die jetzt so genial oder tun die nur so? Ach, lass gut sein, ist doch auch egal. Ich will einfach nur zuhoeren. Mann, diese Gitarren! Der Sound schoen crunchig-schmatzend, die Riffs super melodioes und der Groove immer mit dem nach Blick nach vorn. Das ist der Rhythmus wo ich immer mit muss. Das erinnert mich dermassen an die fruehen Teenage Fanclub! Und an die Lemonheads. Ach, ist mir schwummrig. Und natuerlich der Gesang. Gerade da hapert es ja manchmal bei den FST-Bands. Hier nicht. Der Saenger (fragt mich nicht, wer von den beiden das ist) hat diesen wunderschoen-weichen, leicht verschnupft klingenden Akzent drauf, der fuer normale deutsche Sterbliche unerreichbar ist. Dazu gibt es ausgefeilten, abwechslungsreichen Backgroundgesang. Was will man mehr? ICH will mehr! Mehr Seaside Stars! OK, du kannst weiterfahren. Es geht wieder. Aber schmeiss doch nochmal dieses Tape rein, bitte.

Every so often, I'll get a cd from a band I'd never heard or heard of, and put it on, and instantly love it. That can't even begin to describe this disc. I put this on, and by the third song, it's already in my year's top ten. This is the jangle pop record of this new decade, and probably the best melodic guitar pop band I've heard since East Village (with the possible exception of Brideshead, though I may like these guys more). There is absolutely nothing bad I can say about this record, so I guess I'll just continue raving... The guitars: perfect sound, mixing crystal clear guitars with ever-so-slightly distorted rhythm guitars, that occasionally break out louder for the breaks. The music is generally upbeat and always moving. The vocals: sunny male vocals with lots of heavenly harmonies and backing vocals. Think East Village, Teenage Fanclub, Speedboat... take the best bits of all and you'll have "The Magic Of Stereo". All of this comes from two German fellows, and I really can't wait to see what they do next! The disc comes in a funny wraparound cardboard sleeve, around the jewel case (like the Sloan "Navy Blues" cd). Do whatever it takes to find this cd, and you'll love it, too! MTQ=12/12

Wenn man "The Magic Of Stereo" von den Seaside Stars in den CD-Player legt und den ersten Takten lauscht, denkt man spontan: Wow! Wieder so eine wunderbare Band aus Schottland. Wie machen die das nur? Warmer, runder Sound - tolle Produktion! Amtlich. Doch wie so oft taeuscht der erste Eindruck, denn die Seaside Stars kommen aus Berlin und haben mit diesem Debuet eines der schoensten Popalben dieses Jahres abgeliefert. Und dafuer brauchten sie weder ein tolles Studio noch einen bekannten Producer. Ganz alleine haben sie dieses Hammeralbum, jawohl ein solches ist es, im heimischen Wohnzimmer aufgenommen. Klar, einen Preis in Sachen Innovation werden sie fuer "The Magic Of Stereo" nicht bekommen, aber diese Scheibe ist in ihrer Schlichtheit so wunderschoen, dass sie sowas auch gar nicht noetig hat. Der Gitarren-Pop der Seaside Stars verbindet dabei scheinbar muehelos die grossen Momente eines Teenage Fanclub mit dem luftigen Songwriting der Lemonheads. Und einige Songs auf diesem Debuet haette Evan Dando auch nicht schoener geschrieben. Also: Kaufen, kaufen, kaufen! Und dann zwischen Subterfuge und Tobacco einordnen.

Bereits ab der ersten Note klingt das Erhoerte ziemlich britisch. Seichter Gitarrenpop, der wie eine Synthese aus den Smiths und den Beach Boys klingt und ein gewisses Sommerfeeling mit sich bringt. Eine Platte, auf der so mancher Hit versteckt ist, den es zu entdecken gilt.

german pop duo seaside stars are actually amongst the least conventionally jangly of the FST enclave (we'll move on to the most jangly in a moment). the dynamic of their post-post-beach boys pop often resembles ivy (nyc), before the latter sucked, as if dominique durand's bittersweet french accent had been replaced by a more carefree teenage fanclub-style drawl. apart from t.f.c., there is a also touch of mary chain in the smooth, glinting pop lines - check out the summer cabriolet soundtrack "good timing". although i have a horrible feeling that if seaside stars were in fact from california (and listening to the album you'd certainly have san francisco, say, way higher up than berlin on the list of possibles) we'd have heard a lot more about them.

So müssen Indie-Gitarren schrammeln – und so müssen Indiestimmen sehnsüchteln! Fernweh. Weltschmerz. Melancholie. Seaside-Stars machen Songs, die den Geist der Beach Boys atmen oder die spezielle Atmosphäre von Platten wie „Emmerdale“, dem Erstlingswerk der schwedischen Cardigans, einfangen. Sie sind Lemonheads, die den Teenage Fanclub aufgenommen werden wollen.
