This band has been championed by both the label and Peter of Twee.net/Clarendon Records (who coreleased this disc) for so long (with Peter even including a song from them on the otherwise current indiepop compilation "Seven Summers" in 1998), that it's only natural that these fellows have created this collection of the band's material. Although Hey Paulette only got around to releasing a couple of singles (and recording a Peel Session) during their brief career in the late 80s/early 90s, the label has discovered a wealth of previously unavailable tunes and even a video of the band's classic single, "I Really Do Love Penelope". The music is naturally up to Firestation's usual standard: guitarpop with male vocals and an emphasis on the jangle and POP! There are countless instant classics (as well as a few old favorites) on here, including "Another Poet", "Give Up", "Our Immeasurable Differences" and of course, "I Really Do Love Penelope" (the latter two of which only appear here in Peel Session form, making this not 100% complete). Any fan of the late-80s British guitarpop sound will be simply thrilled with this disc... MTQ=17/17Back in the mid 1980’s indie-pop bands sprang up in the provincial cities of Manchester, Glasgow and Bristol with guitars in their hearts and heads awash with lyrics about girls and boys and unrequited love.
It was with a little surprise that I learned that Hey Paulette hailed from Dublin, but it didn’t stop those workaholics from Firestation Records from tracking them down and rounding up a collection of old singles, Peel session tracks and live recordings to create yet another top notch indie-pop compilation for their already impressive roster.
Sounding something like a cross between the Waltones, the Desert Wolves and the Man From Delmonte, Hey Paulette are certainly a quality example of classic C86.
‘I Really Do Love Penelope’ is probably their best known track, but there are plenty of other fine moments to be enjoyed, such as old B-side ‘I Don’t Want To Be A Male Bardot’, ‘Pebbledash’, ‘Our Immeasurable Differences’ and a great cover of ‘I Must Be In love’. It’s hard to say much more about this release. If you like C86, you’ll love this.
